Mexico City has a new mayor and with him comes a redesign of the previous (and In my opinion) very successful identity.
I just wanted to describe on which levels it fails:
The previous identity was a welcome change to the very bureaucratic identity that had been used up to that point, it reflected the identity of the city very well.
Mexico City is an artistic, gigantic, lively and creative megalopolis, all of these qualities were conveyed by the previous logo. The current design does not reflect any of these qualities, and while there are plenty of examples of identities for big cities that fail, we also have examples of cities that have gone well beyond our expectations like the identity of Melbourne designed by Jason Little.
In the end, I hope that the government of the DF realizes more and more that design matters, not only in the visual sense but even the way the city itself is constructed and planned. Going forward, the city officials will have to realize this to improve the way the city itself evolves, the decision to use this logo tells me that this realization has not dawned on them yet.
A logo might seem like a simple thing of no concern when the city faces so many problems, but it is the rallying point of the citizens and the government, it is the visual distillation of the identity of what it means be a member of this city, and as someone who loves Mexico City it saddens me to see this being used as the team badge.
